SMART FARM ARCHITECT PROJECT: A WEEK OF LEARNING, COMMUNITY SUPPORT, AND HARD WORK

This past week, we reached a meaningful milestone in our smart greenhouse project. After a period of careful planning, we transitioned from ideas to hands-on work, bringing us one step closer to creating an educational and sustainable farming space. While it’s been a busy time,
we’re motivated by both the progress we’ve made and the chance to contribute to something meaningful.

Our team has also taken a moment to support a cause close to our hearts— the recent disaster relief efforts in Valencia (thank you, Sara, for sharing this initiative). We’ve come together to make a small donation and join a fundraising run, knowing that every bit of help counts.

From Plans to Reality: Beginning Our Greenhouse Project

As we began the construction phase, we deepened our understanding of the key components for our greenhouse and explored how we could integrate them:
Digital Incubator: This incubator will enable us to precisely control the growing environment, ensuring optimal conditions for plant growth.

  • FarmBot: This tool will automate tasks like planting and watering, seamlessly blending technology with nature.
  • Hydroponic Towers: These soil-free towers will utilize nutrient-rich water, offering a space-saving and resource-efficient solution.

Embracing Sustainability with Reclaimed Wood

We’re committed to reusing materials wherever we can. For this project, we chose reclaimed wood as a primary material and have been working to prepare it for use in the greenhouse. After applying a borax treatment to protect it, we added a coat of earthy brown paint. Meanwhile, others worked on pouring the concrete foundations that will support the greenhouse’s structure. This part of the project has been challenging, but seeing each step come together has been rewarding.

Connecting with the Community: Workshops, Gardening, and a Treasure Hunt

Our project is also about reaching out to the local community. Some team members had the chance to lead workshops for kids, sharing a bit about sustainable farming and letting them explore some of the science behind our work. Others helped with gardening, getting hands-on experience with organic practices. These moments have been as rewarding for us as they are for the community—each interaction reminds us why we’re passionate about this project. We even took part in a fantastic treasure hunt to explore Samobor, which was a fun way to bond with the community and learn more about our surroundings.

Reflections and Lessons Along the Way

Throughout this journey, we’ve been learning constantly. From practical skills to the importance of teamwork and patience, each day brings new insights. But maybe the most valuable part has been the conversations we’ve shared, learning from one another and connecting over our shared goals. It’s humbling to work alongside such a dedicated team, all working toward the same purpose.
