After spending her first week in Samobor, Cris can finally tell you about her first impressions of this unique country. Will you accompany her to discover the first brushstrokes of Croatian culture through the eyes of a Spanish girl?

Hello everyone!

The first thing I want to talk about is Croatian people. Against all forecasts and ignorant judgments, the Croats have a character that is very similar to the Spanish one. They are close, familiar, outgoing, open-minded, attentive and welcoming people. Of course, the Mediterranean character is noticeable in the Croats. One mistake I unconsciously made before coming to this country was to think that perhaps people in here would be more distant and that it would be difficult to get to know them deeply. However, I was totally wrong. And I couldn’t be happier that I was!

There were different moments that made me realize of this. The first one was when I met my colleagues. Ivan, Romina, Barbara and Vlado were very friendly from the first moment. The truth is that I arrived a weekend before starting to work and they did not hesitate to come over the house to introduce themselves and say hello. I felt at home! The second moment in which I noticed the Croatian closeness, was in the intercultural afternoon that we organized last Friday. We exchanged curiosities about our cultures, typical dishes and traditions and at that moment I could realize that our humor and way of enjoying life were very similar. Spanish and Croats were not as different as I thought after all.

As for work, everything is very natural in the organization. Communication is very open and fluid and my colleagues are really attentive to my needs and desires. To be honest, I feel like one of the team from day one. The independence and responsibility given to me in the tasks to be carried out within the organization make me feel fulfilled. Besides, the projects in which I am involved make me especially excited because they perfectly fit with my values, tastes and philosophy of life: connecting with nature, putting youngsters and elderly people in contact so that there is a transfer of knowledge or participating in cultural activities both local and international are some of the projects in which I will be involved. I thought my dream job didn’t exist until I joined Pozitiva Samobor. Thank you for that, team!

Then, although I have only been living in Croatia for a week, I have already been able to discover some of the hidden treasures that Samobor keeps for its people. To name some: the viewpoint of Samobor or “Vidikovac Tepec”, the castle of Samobor or “Stari Grad Samobor” and the most typical dessert in here that is called “Kremšnita” which is also a gastro heritage and the symbol of Croatia by excellence.

The last thing I would like to mention is the notable difference between the management of COVID in Croatia and in Spain. In the case of Spain, people is wearing mask everywhere and they don’t remove it at all. Open spaces? Mask. Closed spaces? Mask too. Restaurants? Mask (you will take it off to eat but while you wait for your food and after finishing it, you have to wear it). In addition, everyone in Spain has an hydroalcoholic gel in their pockets. Also, depending on the Spanish region in which you live, you will not be able to be home later than 20:00 (in the case of Granada or 22:00 in the case of Madrid). Otherwise, you will have a fine to pay. The case of Croatia is quite different. Here the Croats are not wearing masks in open spaces but in closed spaces they do. This hydroalcoholic gel is seen in stores to be used when entering at them, but it is not so common that people have a small bottle of this gel with them. Far from giving an opinion on the management of this critical situation, what is clear to me is that there are notable differences in both countries. That is always a surprise. At least to me.

Be that as it may, seems like I have had a very entertaining week, don’t you think? More news are to come next week!

Thanks for reading me.

With love,
Cris.
